Basketball

What have I learned?

In basketball I have learnt many different athletic, and social skills. My running has significantly improved, which I have noticed, because I can run longer distances without feeling as tired as I use to in the past. My muscles have adapted to regular physical activity. In the beginning of the school year, I would feel sore for at least two days after only playing for 10 minutes in a game. Now I sometimes play more than 30 minutes in a game, and will not feel sore at all. Before I joined basketball, it was my least favorite sport. Now it has become my favorite, and I am able to layup, dribble, and pass. Joining the basketball team had also taught me about how to work in a team. In the past I disliked group work, and had trouble socializing with others. Through basketball, however I have learnt how to approach others with a smile, and easily begin and lead conversations. As a result, the basketball team has become a family to me.

What skills have I used?

Skills I have learnt include teamwork and strategical thinking skills, which were used in practice and games. I have also used leadership skills when I was captain of the B team. I learnt that being trustworthy and approachable is a key factor in order to become an efficient leader for younger students, who at first were shy towards me.

What's been difficult?

Learning a new sport in general was difficult, because I am not an athletic person. I found it challenging to dribble and shoot. It was also difficult to overcome the panic, which overcame me at every game, because I was nervous of letting the team down.

How have you worked with others?

I have worked with teammates, as this is vital in order to become a good basketball player. They were more advanced than me, yet were still there to congratulate me with hugs and cheers whenever I managed to score during a game or practice. I supported them, and they supported me. As a result, the team has become a family for me.

What have I enjoyed?

I enjoyed gaining new athletic skills, and improving my ability to work in teams. Mostly, though, I enjoy the friends I have made, and confidence I have gained through basketball.

What else do I want to do?

After I graduate, I would like to join a basketball team so I can continue to lead an active and balanced lifestyle. Most importantly, though, I would like to improve ball handling skills, and make new friends through basketball.
