Volleyball

What have I learned?

I have learnt how to play different positions in volleyball, and improved my ball handling skills.

What skills have I used?

I have used my ball handling and teamwork skills.

What's been difficult?

It's been difficult to serve, because I have not had the chance to practice this in the past.

How have you worked with others?

Volleyball is a team sport, and good communication is essential.

What have I enjoyed?

I enjoyed learning how to serve, and learning a new sport.

What else do I want to do?

In the future, I would definitely consider playing volleyball in a club.

Bali Ecology Camp

What have I learned?

I have learnt that I don't need to constantly use technology, how to snorkel, how to analyze rubbish, and about the importance of reducing, recycling, and reusing.

What skills have I used?

I have used my camping skills I have acquired when I was a girl scout, and analysis skills when we observed all aspects of the marine environment.

What's been difficult?

It was difficult to sleep well in a tent, and to not have running water available.

How have you worked with others?

I have worked with others during group activities, where we analyzed the distribution of trash on the shore, setting up the tent, and many other activities.

What have I enjoyed?

I have enjoyed every single aspect of trip. I will find it especially memorable how everyone sit around the campfire and just talk and sing without constantly checking their phones, how everyone would wake-up in the morning without the help of an alarm and watch the sunrise.

What else do I want to do?

This trip has inspired me to study marine biology, as becoming a marine biologist requires a flexible timetable, and feel passionate about research and the environment.

Kampung Kids

What have I learned?

I learnt how to organize lessons, which appeal to a younger audience, and how to handle younger children. I have also had the chance to interact with children from the local Indonesian community.

What skills have I used?

I have used my Indonesian language, teaching and creativity skills.

What's been difficult?

It was difficult to create a lesson, where the children would not get bored. When they were not interested, they had difficulties concentrating, and would take frequent trips to the restroom in groups.  It was also challenging to work with other Kampung Kids members

How have you worked with others?

I have worked together with Ms. Ani, who gave me feedback for my lessons,

What have I enjoyed?

I enjoyed seeing the children smile, when they were having fun, or when I drew them something they asked me to. It was a pleasant experience to teach these children, who became very attached after a few weeks. Even though I quit Kampung Kids, they often see me at the end of the school day, and tried to convince me to start teaching them again.

What else do I want to do?

I enjoyed teaching children English and Computer skills, and would definitely continue participating in community service activities

Jakarta Clean-Up Day

What have I learned?

I learnt that most of the rubbish in Jakarta is not disposed correctly, and a large amount of it ends up in the gutters, which cause flooding.

What skills have I used?

Skills, which were used during this activate included patience, hygiene, and motivational skills.

What's been difficult?

It was difficult to continue picking up rubbish, even though the smell was so pungent. All of my clothes were also completely dirty, because I was frequently inside the gutter in order to pick up trash. It was also challenging to motivate the other volunteers, because they did not feel motivated enough to bend down and pick up rubbish.

How have you worked with others?

Cleaning the streets was a team effort, and I cleaned the streets together with the other participants.

What have I enjoyed?

I enjoyed the physical difference I had made. For example, after picking rubbish from the gutter, the water began to flow again, and I therefore helped prevent potential floods. Picking up trash also allowed the streets to look much cleaner.

What else do I want to do?

I enjoyed this activity, and therefore would be willing to participate in future Jakarta Clean Up Days, and other community service activities.

SRC President

What have I learned?

I have learnt that it is pretty difficult to be a good leader, because many in the SRC either felt unmotivated, or often did not agree with certain ideas.

What skills have I used?

I have used leadership, persuasion, planning, and teamwork skills.

What's been difficult?

It was difficult to work with others who felt unmotivated to help organize events. At times it was challenging to balance school work, and time for other activities with SRC-related activities. It was also difficult to meet the wishes of students and the teachers, as many proposals were not approved by the headmaster.

How have you worked with others?

I have worked with the other members of the school council, in order to brainstorm ideas, share the workload of organizing events such as prom. Being an SRC member required collaboration with students and teachers, in order to find solutions or have certain events approved.

What have I enjoyed?

I enjoyed establishing a new school tradition such as prom, and being an active student contributing to the school community. I enjoyed making a difference, seeing the student's excited for events such as prom, and wanting to continue such an event in the coming years.

What else do I want to do?

I would not want to occupy a leadership position, as I do not find myself being the type of person who is able to make decisions for other people. However, I did enjoy contributing to the school community, and would therefore be interested in becoming an active member of my future university's community.

Pejaten Performers Flute & Clarinet Group

What have I learned?

I have learnt how to play the dance of the sugar plum fairies.

What skills have I used?

I have use my violin playing skills.

What's been difficult?

It was difficult to be able to find enough time to practice and perfect the piece. The practice times were also during lunch, which also meant I had to give up break time, even when I had two tests on the same day.

How have you worked with others?

I have worked with others in order to agree on ideal practice times, and I had to listen to the other group members in order to make sure I am harmonizing them.

What have I enjoyed?

I did not particularly enjoy this activity, because I had too little time to practice, and I didn't enjoy the song we played.

What else do I want to do?

In the future I would certainly, continue playing the violin.

Choir

What have I learned?

I have learnt new songs, and how to behave on stage.

What skills have I used?

I have used my vocal and performance skills.

What's been difficult?

It was sometimes difficult to sing songs, which are not in my vocal range. I find it also challenging to perform on stage.

How have you worked with others?

Choir is a performance group, so it requires maximum cooperation from all choir members.

What have I enjoyed?

I have enjoyed singing.

What else do I want to do?

In the future, I would like to participate in a choir group, as I enjoy singing with other people.
